Elizabeth

Darcy,

Mr. Bennet

Mrs. Bennet

Jane Bennet

Miss Bennet he acknowledged to be pretty, but she smiled too much.

understanding, Darcy was the superior. Bingley was by no means deficient, but Darcy was clever. He was at the same time haughty, reserved, and fastidious, and his manners, though well bred, were not inviting.

I have been used to consider poetry as the food of love, ” said Darcy.

It is your turn to say something now, Mr. Darcy. — I talked about the dance, and you ought to make some kind of remark on the size of the room, or the number of couples.”

He smiled, and assured her that whatever she wished him to say should be said.

A woman must have a thorough knowledge of music, singing, drawing, dancing, and the modern languages, to deserve the word; and besides all this, she must possess a certain something in her air and manner of walking, the tone of her voice, her address and expressions, or the word will be but half deserved.”

Your mother will never see you again if you do not marry Mr. Collins, and I will never see you again if you do.

The more I see of the world, the more am I dissatisfied with it.

It is a rule with me, that a person who can write a long letter, with ease, cannot write ill.

vanity is a weakness indeed. But pride — where there is a real superiority of mind, pride will be always under good regulation.

You might have talked to me more when you came to dinner.”

“A man who had felt less, might.”

I shall never forget: “had you behaved in a more gentleman-like manner.”

Their eyes instantly met, and the cheeks of each were overspread with the deepest blush.

Eliza

“In vain have I struggled. It will not do. My feelings will not be repressed. You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you.”

Elizabeths astonishment was beyond expression. She stared, coloured, doubted, and was silent. This he considered sufficient encouragement, and the avowal of all that he felt and had long felt for her immediately followed.

“You have said quite enough, madam. I perfectly comprehend your feelings, and have now only to be ashamed of what my own have been. Forgive me for having taken up so much of your time, and accept my best wishes for your health and happiness.”

You wanted me, I know, to say ‘Yes, that you might have the pleasure of despising my taste; but I always delight in overthrowing those kind of schemes, and cheating a person of their premeditated contempt. I have therefore made up my mind to tell you that I do not want to dance a reel at all — and now despise me if you dare.”

I might still have been but for you, dearest, loveliest Elizabeth! What do I not owe you! You taught me a lesson, hard indeed at first, but most advantageous. By you, I was properly humbled.

Such a change in a man of so much pride excited not only astonishment but gratitude — for to love, ardent love, it must be attributed.

How could you begin? ” said she. “I can comprehend your going on charmingly, when you had once made a beginning; but what could set you off in the first place? ”

“I cannot fix on the hour, or the spot, or the look, or the words, which laid the foundation. It is too long ago. I was in the middle before I knew that I had begun.”
